Know the Different Types and Methods of Air Duct Cleaning

September 22, 2023

There are many ways to keep your air ducts clean and safe.

Depending on your HVAC unit and preference, you can choose from a variety of air duct cleaning method

Clean air is an important key to a healthy life. A lot of factors can easily affect your air quality, which is problematic. And most of the time, your HVAC system will be the culprit behind the bad air quality circulating in your home.

This is because your HVAC system will naturally accumulate dust and debris as days pass by. And if debris is filling your unit, chances are high for those pollutants to be carried and circulated through your home. If that happens, your air will have dust and debris mixed in, increasing the chances of allergies and respiratory issues. If that’s the case, a good air duct cleaning is in order to improve your air quality.

However, cleaning your air ducts is not the same as sweeping your floor or wiping down your countertops. The air duct is made up of a complicated system of tubes and ducts that connect your HVAC unit to the air vents all over your house. Their role is to deliver and change the air from room to room. Cleaning them requires special equipment and knowledge to avoid damaging the air ducts.

Therefore, it’s highly recommended that you leave air duct cleaning to the professionals. They have the knowledge, skills, and equipment to pull off a successful air duct cleaning. Even without the skills of a pro, there’s no harm in learning what goes on during the cleaning process. Having the knowledge always comes in handy, especially if you want to suggest a preferred cleaning method for your system.

Here are some of the common types and methods when doing air duct cleaning.

The Agitation and Extraction Method

This is considered to be the most common and recommended type of cleaning. This method involves mechanical agitation and extraction. Your air ducts will be shaken or agitated by a machine to loosen the dust and debris sticking in the ducts. Extraction then takes place, removing the pollutants inside your air ducts and properly disposing of them afterwards.

The Steam Air Duct Method

In doing steam air duct cleaning, cleaners use a wand that releases steam into the duct system. However, this isn’t your average steam. It’s highly pressurized and heated and can effectively remove dust and debris in your ducts and air vents. However, since most HVAC systems are now using and powered by electric components, the steam might do some damage. Because of that, this method is best for those who still have older HVAC units.

The Truck-Mounted Vacuum Method

This method uses a truck with a vacuum mounted on it, hence the name. The vacuum is attached to the truck and can suck in air volume between 10,000 to 15,000 cubic feet per minute from the vents. The truck not only has the power, but it's also equipped with rotary brushes for easy debris removal. The pollutants removed from the air ducts are then collected in a separate compartment in the truck.

The Point-of-Contact Air Duct Method

Point-of-Contact cleaning is considered to be the most effective and safest method. This type of cleaning involves a small, portable vacuum cleaner along with using the agitation and extraction method. The reason why this is considered to be the safest is because of the HEPA filters used in the vacuum. The filters improve the cleaning process by preventing cross-contamination.

The state of your environment plays a very important role in your health. That’s why cleaning up your home, a place where you spend most of your time, is essential to ensure better health. Cleaning your HVAC system can help improve your air quality, and breathing in better air quality promotes better health in return. Therefore, getting your air ducts cleaned regularly and knowing how it’s done can be helpful.
